Riley’s Basic training was at Kings Point. While a cadet on ship in convoy to Med his ship was ordered out of the convoy due to excessive smoke; then they saw another convoy that seemed to them that all ships were making smoke! In Naples the Captain ringed the ship with barbed wire at the water line to prevent mine explosions on the hull. He made the Murmansk run and when he had enough sea time to sit for license he was sent to Special School at Pass Christian; after getting his second mate license he served in the Navy on board AKA-65 USS Shoshone where he was 1st Lieutenant, CIC officer and OOD.
